Our campaign
to get
Democratic and
Republican platform planks to protect children from
marketers is gathering momentum. Last week,
we met with the Democratic Party's National Platform Director
and CCFC members around the country attended local platform
meetings to advocate for a platform plank on the
commercialization of childhood. This week,
we need your help to demonstrate the broad support for these
planks by signing petitions to the Democratic and Republican
Platform Committees - and then forwarding this message to
friends and family to urging them to do the same:
To sign the
petition to the Republicans, please visit

To sign the
petition to the Democrats, please visit

Thanks so much
to all of you who took the time last week to attend platform
meetings in your communities. We've enjoyed
hearing your reports. Here's one of our
favorites:
I attended an
Obama listening meeting in
Henderson,
Nevada today. It
was a small meeting (there were 6 other people there and one
Obama campaign worker). No one else had printed materials with
them, so I decided to just speak from my heart and see what
other people had to say. I mostly focused on how commercial
advertising sends negative messages about the value of education
and the authority of teachers ("kids rule school"), because I am
an educator and I have to deal with the fall out. I also talked
about how unfair it is to manipulate young children who are not
able understand the nature of advertising. Other people chimed
in with comments about obesity and violence. Everyone agreed
that marketing to children is a problem and someone said "Wow, I
had never thought about this before!". The consensus of the
group was to ask for a federal ban on advertising to children
under 12. - Pamela V.
It's amazing
what happens when we get the conversation going.
That's why we need your help to make marketing to
children an issue in this year's presidential campaign.
Please note
you do not need to be a registered member of either party to
sign the petitions and you're more than welcome to sign both.
